This panel addresses the current so-called migrant crisis in Eric Adams’ New York City from the lens of two organizers and researchers, Mariel Acosta and Diane Enobabor. Together we trace a current history of the unfolding of the critical state of abandonment of asylum seekers, and the response of mutual aid, the state, and everything in between through our organizing work influenced by anarchism practiced by the global majority. Our mutual aid work supporting asylum seekers, informed by anarchist prefigurative politics, relies on direct action tactics to address issues that require rapid response when state actors fail and bureaucratic blockages are implemented against asylum seeker’s advancement to self-sufficiency.
