This workshop is bilingual, in Portuguese and English. A live translator will be present.

In this workshop we will talk about the self-organization experience of recyclable material collectors in Goiás-Brazil, presenting it as an example of resistance in the face of the progress of the reaction. In this sense, this workshop will be divided into three moments. In the first, we will deal with the life experience of recyclable material collectors (on the streets, pulling carts, or in the dumps), facing all kinds of political, economic and cultural violence. Second, we will deal with the way waste pickers organized themselves, at the beginning of the 21st century, to fight for their needs, having as principles self-management, direct democracy, mutual support, class solidarity and class independence. Finally, we will analyze some political and social changes that have occurred in the last few years in Brazil and the way in which the pickers reorganized themselves to react, based on the great history of struggle they had created at the beginning of the century and even taking advantage of the great crisis produced by pandemic to massify your organization. We understand that such an experience could serve as inspiration for the different marginalized categories of workers around the globe, who, having neither money nor power, may find, in the unity and solidarity of those below, the necessary strength to react.
