We are a team of NYC based street medics, anarchist HCWs, and community health organizers who care about air quality, preventing infectious disease, and intervening where we can to solve health problems rooted in socioeconomic health disparities. We are currently not working as an “org” or under any name for our formation, but we could provide something if needed for ABF flyers and whatnot. Our offering: “Mask consults” – providing quantitative fit testing services to those who are either new to masking, want to mask better but don’t know how, or who haven’t found a mask that works for them. Mask fit is highly individual, what protects one face might not protect another. Nose bridge height, overall head size, whether or not someone wears glasses, disability needs, and hair styles are all variables in how well a mask fits someone. We will also provide and distro a wide array of masks for people to try — we can guarantee almost everyone will likely be able to find something that works for them from our supply. We are able to test and compare the air quality inside one’s mask to the air outside to test the filtration efficacy, the resulting fraction is considered a passing score if it is 100+. We want to work with people and test various masks until we can get them fitted with a mask that passes. Quantitative fit testing is often done as an OSHA requirement for various jobs like in healthcare or construction. For the average person not at work, this is essentially a luxury service. The machine used to test costs upwards of $20,000. However, we are lucky enough to have one provided to us for free by others doing this kind of organizing across North America. This will help provide people with high quality and evidence-based tools to better survive worsening air quality, environmental racism, chemical weapons and policing, preventable diseases like COVID, and increased disability with the added benefit of being an anti-surveillance tool. We can also test the kind of respirators that protect against chemical weapons, not just N95s.
