Through a set of constraints decided by consensus, the writing exercise known as “Exquisite Corpse” can be much more than a fun party game. Through automatic writing, chance, improvisation, and individual creativity, a group can create a vital space of vulnerability, encouragement, and creativity. Exquisite Corpse takes the writer and artist out of their studio and into a commons of co-creation and trust. In this hour workshop, we will learn about the history of Automatic Writing, Co-Writing, and Exquisite Corpse from its mystical origins, to the 20th century Surrealists, and how it can be adapted as an Anarchist tool for community building. We will then generate a multitude of poems together, in real time, and share our results, and our hearts! Daniel Werachowski is a teacher, grower, cooperator, and poet from the Midwest and currently based in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
