This 2 hour workshop is an introduction to personal digital privacy and information security practices, and will cover some data management basics, as well. This workshop is open to anyone, regardless of skill, but will have a particular focus on practices most applicable in community organizing, record-keeping, and archival settings. No preexisting skills or technologies are required. Participants should bring a device with them, as we will be doing some hands-on activities to help them secure their devices and digital footprints. We would cover topics including:
· What information about me is out there?
· Professional vs personal digital identities
· Identifying & removing information from public directories
· Personal communication infosec (emails, phones, social media)
· Privacy considerations for documenting protests / actions
· Securing and encrypting personal devices and files
· Best practices for file naming, data backup, and metadata.
