Gallery Exhibit Opening and Zine Release Event.
The Anarchist Switchboard was a political organizing space on the Lower East Side from late 1983 to 1989. It was started by people who were involved with the older activist organizations like the Libertarian Book Club and Free Space Alternate U.
In 1988, it was taken over by newer activists organizing around the issues surrounding Tompkins Square Park. Due to several incendiary factors, the Switchboard was
contentiously shut down in the summer of 1989. Some regulars decided to immediately open a new space, which they turned into an Anarchist Bookstore.
There will be a presentation / talk / moderated group discussion featuring several people who organized at the Switchboard throughout the years.
In addition, we are putting out a zine that chronicles this history and we are hoping to put said zine out during the 2024 NYC Anarchist Bookfair. To accompany that, Switchboard-related flyers and documents will be displayed on the walls of C-Squat, which will surround all Bookfair related workshops at MORUS.
This exhibit covers all things Switchboard, 1983 to 1987.
