GREECE ALERT: TWO ANARCHISTS MEMBERS OF ROUVIKONAS ARE THREATENED WITH LIFE SENTENCE !!!
Alert and call for support before the trial on October 13 2021!
SUPPORT FOR GIORGOS KALAITZIDIS AND NIKOS MATARAGKAS (ROUVIKONAS)
Two years after the tremendous momentum of solidarity without borders which allowed two members of Rouvikonas to avoid prison, a new threat of an unprecedented extent hovers above the group. A Kafkaian trial awaits Giorgos and Nikos on October 13th, based on false accusations. This criminalization attempt of the social movement might cost life imprisonment for these two political activists. Their group, yet exemplary and irreproachable, has obviously become too disturbing. A new international mobilization is necessary.
The facts: On 7 June 2016, a drug dealer is executed in Athens, in the district of Exarcheia. This execution is claimed by a self-defence collective named “Militia of the armed People”, which declared that the drug dealer had a violent behaviour, threatening and dangerous in Exarcheia, at the same time towards the members of the social movement and towards the inhabitants of the district.
Three years passed. No member of Rouvikonas is targeted by the investigation. In July 2019, Kyriakos Mitsotakis comes into power and pledges, among other things, to end “by all means” Rouvikonas, renowned all over the country for its actions of solidarity and its resistance clearly unrelated to this kind of process*. Eight months later, in March 2020, an investigating judge takes over the case and charges two Rouvikonas activists: Nikos Mataragkas and Giorgos Kalaitzidis, respectively for homicide and for incitement to murder.
But in June 2020, after their hearing at the prosecution, they are both released without bail and the lawsuits are logically dropped.
Twist in April 2021 : although the file against the members of Rouvikonas is empty, the State and its mechanisms of repression abruptly decide to sue Giorgos and Nikos, based on false accusations and their trial is rescheduled for October 13 2021!
This manipulation from the Power turn Giorgos and Nikos into its hostages, aiming to destroy them politically and physically: they risk a lifetime sentence! The goal is to also harm the image of the group Rouvikonas and to criminalize the social movement in Greece, as the Colonels in power did fifty years ago.
Against this Kafkaian trial, we give our full support to the political, solidary activists Giorgos Kalaitzidis and Nikos Mataragkas and we demand the immediate termination of the proceedings.

We also invite to support them financially in that arm wrestling which is, for Rouvikonas, not limited to this trial: the group is frequently subject of legal proceedings for less serious motives, however highly costly (in total and for all of the tried actions, for now to the next coming months, the group legal expenses amounts to more than ten thousand euros) :

Quelques réponses aux questions courantes sur Rouvikonas (témoignage des membres des convois solidaires qui ont souvent rencontré le groupe) :
– Rouvikonas est aussi un groupe solidaire qui mène fréquemment des actions auprès des précaires grecs et migrants, y compris des distributions de nourriture et d’autres formes d’aide.
– Rouvikonas est aussi un groupe antifasciste, et non des moindres puisque le réseau antifasciste Distomo (qui a permis de chasser Aube Dorée du centre d’Athènes, bien avant les sanctions judiciaires) a été créé par Rouvikonas.
– Rouvikonas est un groupe mixte où les filles sont bien présentes et où sont rejetés sexisme, machisme et virilisme (le groupe inclue d’ailleurs une section féministe très active et autonome).
– Rouvikonas inclue des membres de plusieurs nationalités et origines.
– Rouvikonas est très majoritairement composé d’ouvriers et de précaires.
– Rouvikonas refuse les avant-gardes et ne souhaite pas être qualifié ainsi.
– Rouvikonas n’agit pas qu’à Exarcheia, mais partout en Grèce.
– Rouvikonas propose régulièrement des rencontres publiques pour discuter avec les personnes souhaitant s’informer et éventuellement rejoindre le groupe.
– Rouvikonas mène souvent des actions en tandem avec d’autres groupes (anars de Thessalonique, kurdes, migrants, antifas, solidaires…)
– Rouvikonas est affilié à la Fédération Anarchiste de Grèce A.O. (anarxiki omospodia)
– Rouvikonas participe aussi à des réunions, concerts ou encore des tournois de foot antifas rassemblant des groupes différents.
